College

Dorm and college essentials for students and the families helping them get ready.

A cozy dorm room with a lamp-lit desk and laptop, a rolling cart, under-bed storage baskets and a plaid throw on the bed

Heading off to college comes with a very long shopping list, and a lot of it ends up unused under a dorm bed. This category is for students and the families helping them: dorm room basics, small-space storage, study and desk setups, bedding and bath, and the practical extras that make shared living easier. It also covers gifts for graduates and college students, from move-in day through finals week.

How I pick college finds

Dorm rooms are small, shared, and temporary, so I look for things that are compact, durable, easy to move, and genuinely useful. Multi-purpose pieces win: a storage ottoman that's also a seat, a bed riser that creates storage space, a caddy that works in a shared bathroom. I also keep an eye on budget, because college costs add up fast. Links go to retailer search results so you can compare current options and prices.

Quick dorm and move-in tips

  • Check the school's list first. Many colleges publish what's provided, what's required, and what's not allowed (often candles, certain appliances, and extension cords without surge protection).
  • Coordinate with the roommate. Split shared items like a mini fridge, rug, or microwave so you don't end up with two of everything.
  • Measure before you buy. Dorm beds are often Twin XL, and storage under the bed depends on how high it can be raised.
  • Go vertical. Over-the-door hooks, stackable bins, and shelf risers make the most of limited floor space.
  • Pack light, then shop nearby. Bring the essentials and pick up the rest after move-in, once you've seen the room.
